Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Make Your Own Custom Collage Layout and Freebie Template-07

I was recently at my local art supply store and saw some ready-made cut-out collage mats for framing multiple photos in one frame. This brought to mind that a similar look would be nice for a scrapbook layout when I had multiple photos that went together. I recently had been to the Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha, Nebraska,  with my daughter to see the Outside Kaneko Exhibit. We took quite a few photographs while there. I thought it would be nice to create a layout with several of my favorites together. So, that is what I did; and here is how I did it. Here is what the finished layout looks like. This tells you where we are headed.

For those of you who don't want to see how I got there, you can scroll down to the bottom and find the link to download the freebie Template for this layout. It is a fully layered .psd document. There are no Groups in the template. So if your version of Photoshop does not have Groups you still can use the template. It is 11 x 8.5-inch, Landscape.

Inserted later: After I finished showing you how to do it this way, I remembered another way of doing it that you might also like. I made this technique into a video that is shown after this method. The video is toward the end of this blog entry.

Layer 0.
Layer 0 is the Background Layer of a new 11 X 8.5-inch Landscape, 300 ppi, RGB, white background document. Of course, you can make your document any size you want it to be.  I use this size since it is the size I use to have books printed. Normally, when a new document opens the background layer is labeled "Background." The word is italicized and the layer is locked (a little padlock shows at the right of the layer). Being locked means you can't do anything to the layer. I know I will want to do something to it later, so I double clicked on the layer in the Layers Panel. When the New Layer dialog came up I accepted the name of Layer 0 and clicked OK. My background layer is now labeled Layer 0 and is not locked. I can now do things with the layer. But, I will do it later.

The naming of my layers gets a little strange from here on. That is because I create a layer and then later I will create a layer under that layer or maybe under more than just that layer. So what I would now normally call Layer 1 might actually end up being the fourth layer up from Layer 0. So my next layer really ends up being Layer 4. So I will now call it Layer 4-Rectangles. And, you will know that there will be layers between that will come later.

Layer 4 - Rectangles.
I created a new layer above my background layer, Layer 0. I want to turn my Grid on to I see it. I usually use the little View Extras button at the top Photoshop Options Bar. However, you can go to View / Show / click on Grid to turn it on. When you want the Grid off just click on it again to turn it off.  When I turn mine on, it comes up with a grid line every 1-inch with 4 subdivisions. This is what I had used the last time I set the grid in Photoshop Preferences. The Grid is sticky, that is, it stays the same until you change it.

I think that using 1/4-inch wide borders around my photos will make them too thick. I want to change them to 1/5-inch. I open up my Photoshop Preferences and select Guides, Grid and Slices. When it opens, I leave the Gridline at every 1-inch and change the Subdivisions to 5. Also, to make sure that things will snap to our grid, go to View / Snap To and make sure all items are checked. And, make sure Snap is checked.

And now our Layer 4 -  Rectangles looks like this.

Using the grid on this layer, I start making my photo frame. Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I make a selection that is a little larger than the opening I want for the first photo. I make it the size of the outside of the frame. Notice how the rectangle snaps to the grid. This really helps to keep things where you want them. What size you make yours will depend on what you want. I am showing what I used for this example.

With the Rectangular Marquee Tool still selected, in its Option Bar, click on the third button over from the left on the left end of the bar, Subtract from Selection. Or, you can hold down the Option/Alt key, you will see a minus sign next to the cursor, and make a selection inside the first selection that is one grid subdivision insider all the way around. What remains is the border of the rectangle that is 1/5th-inch wide.

Make sure your Foreground Color is Black. Actually you could use any color you want. I am just using black in this example. Fill the selection with black. I used the keyboard shortcut of Option / Alt - delete / Backspace to fill with the Foreground color. Command / Control - delete / Backspace will fill the selection with the Background color. Then I deselected the selection.

I want to keep all my rectangles on separate layers in case I might want to change something later. I create a new layer. I will call it temporarily Layer 4a. With the Rectangular Marquee Tool selected I make the outside selection of my second rectangle. I start it so that it overlaps with the first rectangle by one grid subdivision.

And then, holding down the Option / Alt key I make a selection inside this selection that will subtract from the first selection.

Then I fill it in with black. Deselect the selection. And with the Rectangular Marquee Tool on a new layer, Layer 4b, I select my third rectangle.

Then, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool while holding down the Option / Alt key I make the selection inside to subtract it from the selection. And, then fill it with black.

Then you continue in the same manner to create all the rectangles that you want. I made a total of eight. And I have 8 layers, Layer 4, 4a, 4b, ... , and 4g.

While I was creating this frame area, I kept each one on its own layer in case I wanted to go back and change any of them. However, now I see I am happy with this arrangement and do not want to change it. I now select all of these 8 layers, by clicking on the top one and holding down the Shift key and clicking on the bottom one to select them all. With all 8 selected, I went to Layers / Merge Layers, and merged the 8 layers into one layer. And this single layer becomes my Layer 4 - Rectangles.

As an aside, I made all of the sides of the frames all the same thickness. This was just for demonstration purpose. You can make them of varying thickness, if you wish, and in that manner create areas of the frame that are thicker and thinner to create just the frame you want for your particular layout.

I no longer need the grid so I went to View / Show and clicked on Grid to uncheck it. And Layer 4 now looks like this.

Layer 3 - Masks and Photos.
Layer 3 is below Layer 4. Layer 3 really is a Group of 16 layers. There are 8 clipping masks and 8 photos clipped to the masks. I am using Photoshop CS5 and I can Group layers into a Group to keep the clutter in the Layers Panel down a little. But, you do not need to Group the layers, you can just leave them as individual layers.

I want to make a clipping mask for each of the openings in the frame and I want them to be below the frame. While Layer 4 is active, I hold down the Command / Control Key and click on the Add New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers Panel. This will open a new layer under the active layer. Make the new layer the active layer. Select the Magic Wand Tool. In the Magic Wand Options Bar select New Selection; Tolerance, I have mine at 5, but the default of 32 is OK, too; Anti-alias checked; Contiguous checked; and Sample All Layers checked.

Then with the Magic Wand Tool click on the inside of the first frame. It doesn't have to be that frame, but I choose it as a beginning point for me. You could click in any frame  you want. This puts a selection (marching ants) on the inside of the frame. You are actually selecting the white area inside the frame to be selected.

I like to have my clipping mask a little larger than the opening. With the selection still active, I went to Select / Modify / Expand and expanded the selection by 10 pixels.

I then set my Foreground Color to a brown color. Any color will be fine just so you see it as it will be the color of your clipping masks. Remember, I am on the layer below the layer with the frame. I then use Option / Alt - delete / backspace to fill the selection with the Foreground color. And I have the first clipping mask on the layer below the frame.

I then repeat the process for all the other seven frame openings. I create a new layer under the current clipping mask. I use the Magic Wand to select the inside, expand the selection by 10 px, fill the selection with my Foreground color. And I now have all 8 clipping masks on layers below the frame. To keep the clutter down in the Layers Panel, I Grouped the 8 layers into a group which is my Layer 3. Again, you do not need to put them in a Group.

If I turn off the visibility of the frame layer, you can see each clipping mask more easily.

I am still in what I have been calling Layer 3 - Masks and Photos. However, this is a Group for me. If you don't have Groups that is fine it will just be a bunch of layers under the frame layer that are the clipping masks for the photos. I turn the visibility of the frame layer back on by clicking the eyeball area in front of its layer. I did this so it is easier for me to see what I am doing. I then make the layer with the mask I want use the active layer. I bring in my first photo. It will go in just above the active mask layer. I use Free Transform (Command / Control - T) to resize and move the photo how I want it in the frame. Then accept the transform.  Here is my first photo inserted.

I then go to each individual mask, make it the active layer, bring in the photo for it, Free Transform as needed, and clip into the mask. And here are all eight photos clipped into the masks.

Layer 0 - Background (back to it).
Remember, we have already unlocked the beginning Background layer by double clicking on the layer and accepting the default name of Layer 0. Now it is just like any other layer. So far we have been having the white background behind our other layers. I really want something other than white for this layout. While Layer 0 is selected, I clicked on the Fx button at the bottom of the Layers Panel and selected Color Overlay. I wanted just a plain solid color for the background. There is enough activity in the images for me. When the Color Overlay dialog of the Layer Style opened  I sampled a color from the second image on the top to get a tan color for the overlay color. Then clicked OK.

Layer 2 - Texture.
So far the background is very stark and plain. It needs a little texture to give it some life. Layer 2 goes between Layer 0 and Layer 3. Layer 1 is still missing, but I will get to it soon. I just finished taking Art of Digital Design 2 with Carina Gardner at the Jessica Sprague site. Wonderful class! In the beginning, Carina showed us how to make our own Scrubbing Brushes to use for adding texture. So, I used my scrubbing brushes and added a little texture to the background. I used the brushes on their own layer, Layer 2. I usually like light texture and not much heavy grunge. So this is just lightly textured.

Layer 5 - Texture for Frame.
Instead of just a black frame around the photos, I wanted to add a texture to the frame. Layer 5 goes above Layer 4. Guess what this is! I opened this image as Layer 5.

Since I have converted it into a black and white image, it may be a little harder to tell what this is. Here is how it originally was photographed.

At the 2010 Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha, Nebraska, Christmas Exhibit, there was this water area that was filled with floating cranberries. That is what this is! I desaturated the image to turn it into a black and white image and that is what I used for Layer 5. I then clipped Layer 5 onto Layer 4, the merged rectangles frame.

While Layer 5 is selected, I clicked on the Fx button at the bottom of the Layers Panel and selected Color Overlay. I  sampled a light blue color from the fourth image on the top and then grayed it down in the Color Picker. This gave me a nice color for the frame that goes nicely with the images and the background.

Layers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 - Text Layers.
On top of all the previous layers are my text layers. Layer 6 is the first part of the title, "Outside". Layer 7 is the second part of the title, "Kaneko". Layer 8 is the third part of the title, or subtitle. Layer 9 is my signature layer. And, Layer 10 is the date layer. I used a darker shade of the background color for the color of the text on Layers 6, 7, and 8. And a lighter tint of the same color for the signature and date layers.

Layer 1 - Flower.
I didn't forget about Layer 1. After looking at the image at this point, it needed something in the left hand side to balance the image a little better. And since this is a garden, what better than a flower. I used one of my flower brushes I had made and stamped that on as Layer 1 which is just above Layer 0 and is below Layer 2, the texture layer. This way the texture will also be on the flower. I used the same color for the flower as for the word Kaneko in the title.

But, this is too dark for the flower. I added in a Color Overlay for this layer. I selected a tint of the color that is between the dark of the text and the background color.

And that is my final image for this layout.

Now for the freebie Landscape 11 x 8.5-inch template for this layout. Here is what it looks like.

It is a fully layered .psd file, 300 ppi, RGB document. The download file is a zip file. You will have to unzip it to use it.

CLICK HERE to download the Template. It is a freebie.

This will take you to 4shared.com. From there you will be able to download the file.  If you haven't used 4shared.com before, when their page opens, on the left-hand side of the page there will be a blue rectangle with a white arrow pointing downward with white text saying "Download      Now." Click on that blue box. This will take you to a new window that will have a box that says "Your download link will appear after wait." There will be a circle with the wait period counting  down. After the wait, where the words "Your download link will appear after wait" were, you will see the words "Download file now." Click on those words and your download will begin. At least this is how it works on my iMac using the Firefox browser. Also, 4shared.com only allows one person to be downloading the file at a time. So, if you have trouble getting the file to download, you may want to try at a later time as someone may already be downloading it when you tried to do so.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how to create your own collage layout to suit your needs. And, I hope you can find some use for the template.

As I mentioned near the beginning of this blog entry, here is another way to create your photo collage. This time I used the Rounded Rectangle Tool to create both the photo masks and the frame. I  used it just to show you how with a different tool.

This is the collage I will be making.
