Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen November 8, 2011

Another Tuesday and I really look forward to my visit with all of you on Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen (Click to go there). Kim's guideline for us this week was:

Tuesday, November 8th's TT Theme is:
the number 2. Put your twist on the number 2, and use at least one layer of any of my textures.
This required some thought on my part as to what to do with the number 2. My mind wanders all over the place in this process. One such wandering had me thinking about my being a Math Major as an undergraduate at UCLA. As a hint to how long ago that was, when I entered UCLA the tuition was $29.00 per semester. Four years later when I graduated, the tuition had gone up to $64.00 per semester. So, I decided I had to do something mathematically with the number 2. I had to use some of my education that my parent's had paid for.
Next, I had to come up with a photo that was appropriate. Fortunately, I had just such a photo that I had recently taken at the Lauritzen Gardens, Omaha, Nebraska. I had just the one from the Outside Kaneko Sculpture exhibit that was there.
Now, I was all set. All I had to do was do something with this information. I set out on my journey.
Layer 1.  As I usually do, I opened a new document that was 11 X 8.5-inch, landscape, 300 ppi, RGB, white background. I won't show this blank white layer.
Layer 2. I brought in my image for this layer and using the Free Transform (Command/Control-T) I resized the image and moved it to the area where I wanted it.

These two large ceramic heads were made by Jun Kaneko. His studio is located in Omaha, Nebraska. Kaneko creates the World's largest free-standing, hand-built, ceramic sculptures. There were 31 large-scale sculptures scattered throughout the gardens. These two heads are about six-feet tall. Here is my start of something about the number 2 – two heads.

Layer 3.  You may not be able to see the signature and date near the bottom of the left head. But, they are there and I took a close-up of the area. Little did I know at the time that I would be using that photo for part of my Number-2 layout. How fortunate that Kaneko made the heads in the year 2002.

I used the method I showed in my blog entry, Control your Feathering, August 8, 2011 (click to go there), to blend the image into the layout image. I not only transformed the layer mask, but I also warped the transform to get it just the way I wanted. And, this is how it is now, with the Layer Blend Mode set to Hard Light and Opacity 100%.

Layer 4.  The signature and date were a little too light, so I duplicated the layer (Command/Control - J) and left the Blend Mode at Hard Light and Opacity 100%. This gave me the result I wanted.

At this point, I noticed that there was some of Layer 3 and Layer 4 hanging down into the white area below the image area. I had not been careful when putting those layers into the image to confine them to just the image area. So I thought about how to get rid of that region from my layout.

Layer 5.  I decided that one way of doing it was to create a layer above Layers 3 and 4, fill it with white, click on the thumbnail of Layer 2 to give me a selection around the image area, then Select the Inverse of the selected area to the outside of the image area (Command / Control - Shift - I), then click on the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers Panel. Remember the active layer is Layer 5. This will hide the image area and allow only the white border to show on Layer 5. That takes care of my goof of allowing some of Layers 3 and 4 going into the border area.

Layer 6.  Now I brought in the texture kk_shadesofnovember. The texture is larger that my layout. I used the Free Transform (Command / Control - T) to bring its edges to the edges of my layout. This is the texture at Normal Blend Mode and 100% Opacity.

While Layer 6 is still the active layer, I Command / Control Clicked on the Thumbnail of Layer 2 to give me a selection around the image area. Then I clicked on the layer mask button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to give me a mask on Layer 6 that allows the texture to show only on the image area. Then I set the Layer Blend Mode to Saturation and Opacity 100%. This gave a rather iridescent coloring to the image.

Layer 7.  Now I wanted to do something with the border area outside the image area. With Layer 6 being the active layer, I duplicated the layer (Layer / Duplicate layer...), and changed the new layer's (Layer 7) Blending Mode to Normal and left Opacity 100%. This gave me the texture over the image area –  not what I wanted.

I clicked on the layer mask to make it active and then Inverted the mask (Command / Control - I). Now I have the texture just over the border area.

Then I reduced the opacity of the layer to 40%.

I hope that you realize that I have no master plan that I stick to as I go about creating the final layout. I start with an idea, but then see where it all takes me along the way. Serendipity and luck play major roles in my creations.

Layer 8.  I needed the borders to be light since I was going to put text in the borders. And, I was going to use black for the text color since the stripes on the heads are black and white. I didn't want the color of the texture to compete with the black text. So, the next thing I did was change the texture color to black and white. I clicked on the Create new fill or adjustment layer button at the bottom of the Layers Panel and selected Black & White. In the panel that opened, I selected Default. Now, this changed the whole layout to black and white. I just want the border area to be black and white. I clipped the adjustment layer to the layer below it, Layer 7, and now the black and white is just applied to the border.

Layer 9.  I needed a title for the layout. Looking at the image, I thought of "Two's Company." But then, since this is about the number 2, it followed that the title would be "2's Company." I used Arial Narrow Bold and white for the color. In the Character Panel, I increased the tracking a little to spread out the letters.

Layers 10, Layer 11, Layer 12 and Layer 13.  These are all text layers using Arial Narrow Bold for the font. Layer 10 is a subtitle at the bottom of the image. It states what, where and when. I added the effects of a small drop shadow and bevel and emboss to make it a little more distinctive than the text on the other three sides. Layers 11, 12 and 13 give some information about the number 2.

Layer 14 and Layer 15.  Layer 14 is my signature stamp, a brush, used with black, in the lower right bottom of the image. The signature brush was made using the Papyrus font, so I used Papyrus for the date, Layer 15, in the lower left of the image, also in black.

Layer 17.  Not Layer 16. Layer 16 will come next. I made a composite layer of all the visible layers. While on Layer 15, I used Command / Control - Option / Alt -Shift - E to give me Layer 17, which is just above Layer 15 at this time. It looks just like the previous image but it is all on one layer. I could turn off the visibility of all the layers below it and the image would not change. I want to make the fuzzy edging to my layout that I frequently do. Normally, I would turn off the visibility of all the layers below this layer except for the white Background layer. Then I would  get a white area outside the fuzzy edging. However, in this layout I want to have the texture I used in its normal color behind my fuzzy edging.

Layer 16.  So I brought in a duplicate of Layer 6, the texture. I deleted the layer mask, leaving just the texture, at Normal Blending mode and 100% Opacity. You do not see the layer because it is hiding below Layer 17.

Back to Layer 17.   With Layer 17 the active layer, with the Rectangle Marquee Tool, I drew a selection that was 1/8-inch in from all four sides of the layer.

Then I clicked on the Add layer mask button at the bottom of the Layers Panel to add the mask to make visible only the area inside the rectangle selection. We now see the texture of Layer 16 showing around the outside edges.

Now I clicked on the thumbnail of the mask to make it active. Then went to Filter / Filter Gallery / Brush Strokes / Sprayed Strokes. I adjusted the parameters to give me what I wanted and clicked OK. And I ended up with this final image for my layout.

I hope that you enjoyed seeing how I went about creating this layout. As I mentioned, serendipity and luck come into play along the way and steer you where to go next in the process. In my final image I really like how the brown of the texture on the border blends into the gray of the identical  image around the image. It makes the gray border area look like it is transparent and you are seeing the brown texture below it. Actually you are since the Black and White texture is at 40% Opacity. But, I did not think about that when I set the Opacity to 40%. Serendipity made an improvement for me that I wasn't expecting.

Have fun with your computer and Photoshop and your scrapbooking.

That's all for now.

Earl

I think there is a lot of photoshop genus at play here too. What layers to turn on and off seems so complicated until you try it. Wonderful again. V
