Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen--30 April 2013

For today's Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen, Kim gave us the following:

Tuesday, April 30th theme is wise words.....

What does this mean?
Your photo must contain at least one layer of any of my textures...and  some form of words...whether it's in the photo or added in post....... totally up to you...

Sound good?

I am still going through my Mother's old Photograph album. For today's Texture
Tuesday I used another of the old photos. This one is of my Uncle Hugo. I never met him. My Mother and her family were all born in Finland. Hugo came to the United States in 1902. He moved back to Finland in 1906. My Mother came to the U. S. in 1914. Hugo came to the U. S. to visit two of his sisters and a brother who were living there. His last visit was in 1923. That is when this studio portrait was taken in Los Angeles, California. I wasn't born until 1929. My sister was born in 1919 and remembers meeting our Uncle Hugo.

I used one of my FREEBIE templates, EarlKDesign_template_02, for my layout. This is what the template looks like in its basic configuration.

This template is very modifiable to suit your needs. There are many layers that you can turn off or on for what you want. If you want to see some more of the possible configurations, go to my Blog entry of 15 December 2010. You can download the template from that entry through 4shared. OR, you can download the template from Box by clicking HERE.

This is my completed layout for this Texture Tuesday.

I modified the template for one main photo. The bottom corner lines were moved a little to accommodate the text. Kim's texture kk_1412 was used twice. It gives a nice texture to the background that is similar to the background in the photo. The first time it was a Normal Mode and 100% Opacity. A copy of kk_1412 was then put on top of the first layer. The Mode was set to Multiply and 100% Opacity. I wanted to darken the left edge of the layout. But, it was now too dark all over. A used a layer mask with a black to white gradient on the mask to allow the darker texture only over the left edge. Now the layout background was the way I wanted it. I added a leaf motif down the paper strip using a brush that I made. I also used the leaf motif behind the text.

My wise saying is about newspapers. The quotation is attributed to Jim Bishop, an American journalist and author, who lived from 1907 to 1987. Today, with computers and the Internet, the newspaper made from malleable lumber is in its old age and may disappear. The newspaper had a life of one day. The digital news has seconds before later news is available. Time marches on.

If you download my FREEBIE template, I hope you find lots of use for it.

Live life fully.

Another wonderful photo Earl. Love how you presented it and enjoyed the story of Hugo. Love the quote about the newspaper..it is sad in today's world that true journalism may be lost. What rich history you have in your family. Great idea for the texture Tuesday today.

So enjoyed reading some of your family history here ... and this graphic work is so well done, Earl! Wonderful quote, as well! I have lots of my parents b/w images, too, and you do inspire me to get them out and start working on them! I have a couple of friends who would be interested in visiting your site here, and learning from you through your tutorials! Also want to thank you, again, for visiting my site this week!
