Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Texture Tuesday . . . 25 March 2014 . . . Quiet

For this Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen, Kim gave us:

Quiet
Whatever your interpretation may be.... simply share a textured image that says 'quiet' to you.....

When I think of quiet, I think of my "quiet place." My quiet place is a place I go to in my mind when I want to feel completely relaxed and carefree. Even if I am sitting in a dentist's chair, I can go to my quiet place and let the dentist do his thing and not be anxious with what the dentist is doing. My quiet place is a lake where I am fishing. It's early morning . . . the sun is just starting to peek over the mountains . . . the dark of night is fading into day . . . all is still . . . just a few little ripples in the water . . . all is very quiet and peaceful. My image tries to convey my mental image of my quiet place to you. Try to visualize it in your mind and see and hear my quiet. Here is the image.

If you would like to see how I did this, click on the Read More>>>

I opened a new document that was 12 x 12-inch x 300ppi. I used a texture of mine that I made on watercolor paper that I stained with Starbucks Pike Place  brewed coffee for my bottom layer. I kept the layer at Normal blend mode and100% Opacity.

Next I brought in my photo of my fishing lake. I cropped the image so that it was a square and a little smaller than my full page.

Then, I duplicate the photo image and had it on the layer above. I turned off the visibility of the duplicate layer. I went back to the first photo layer. Using the method of Part Photo, Part Sketch at Oscraps, I painted on the layer mask with a white bristle brush to reveal part of the image.Normally, at this point in the Part Photo, Part Sketch technique you set the layer blend mode to Darken to have only the black lines show. Instead, I left the Mode at Normal so that you also see the white and the black lines . . .  and Opacity 100%.

Next, continuing the Part Photo, Part Sketch technique, I turned on the visibility of the duplicate of the photo image and gave it a black layer mask. The layer mask hides all the image. Using the same white bristle brush to reveal part of the image I showed some of the color in the image. Make sure you are on the mask when painting with the white brush.

Now just above the bottom layer, I brought in Kim's texture kk_iAm. This is what it looks like at Normal mode and 100% Opacity.

I then changed the layer Mode to Soft Light and kept Opacity 100%.

Above Kim's kk-iAm texture, I brought in Kim's texture kk-now. Here it is at Normal Mode and 100% Opacity.

Now for the magic to change it into being night around my just waking up lake. I changed the layer blend Mode to Subtract . . . Opacity 100%. Just like real night, if you look closely you will see little variations in color throughout the dark.

I then created the thin line (10 px) hard round brush line around a portion of the image. I put this on a layer at the top of the layer stack. I created straight lines, just off true vertical or horizontal, by clicking the cursor at the beginning of the line and then moving the cursor to where I want the end of the line to be and then hold down the Shift key and click the cursor. I used black for the brush color. I changed the layer blend Mode to Divide, which changes the line to white. And I lowered the Opacity to 50%.

Then I added in my title text at the top of the layer stack. I added to the layer a Drop Shadow and a Bevel and Emboss. I used an orange color selected from the clouds for the text color. I also kerned my text a little to give a better spacing between the letters. I reduced the Opacity to 50%, AND, reduced the Fill to 50%. Reducing the fill allowed the text to be partially transparent and still kept the effects fully visible.

That is how I created my Quiet Place so that you might be able to visualize it in your mind, too. Here it is, again.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my Quiet Place. You can use it if you need to find a quiet place if you don't have one of your own.

Be sure to visit Texture Tuesday to see what others have done for Quiet.

That's all for now.

Live life fully and enjoy.

Earl

Peaceful photo, interesting how many find water to be their quiet, happy place. Same here. I enjoy seeing your techniques and appreciate the time you take to do that. Thank you!

Another masterpiece, Earl! And it does look so very quiet, really lovely. {Thanks for you offer to help with CS6. Don't be surprised to hear from me! I was stuck trying to use mini-bridge - getting it to show the files I wanted - but I figured that out yesterday when I did my TT photo.}

Seems that your quiet place is much like a mine - a place in nature. Mine is usually a garden, but your scene of the quiet lake and the image of fishing is near to my heart. Your image brings sweet memories of my father. Thank you.
