Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Texture Tuesday … Free & Easy … 29 April 2014

For this Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen, Kim gave us the following theme:

Next weeks theme ....Tuesday, April 29th.
          free & easy
I really didn't know what photo to use to start with. It was a rather beautiful day this Saturday, 26 April 2014. It was warm . . . in the 70s. There was a strong wind blowing and making the trees by my house sing a song for me. I grabbed my little point and shoot camera, hopped in the car and took a drive into the farm land near by. The fields were as they were several weeks ago, but the trees were leafing out and showing green. It was a great day after all the cold and snow for so long. As I came over a little rise, the vista ahead of me caught my eye. I stopped the car and took the shot out the open window. That is the shot I am using for this Texture Tuesday. To give the feel of the open expanse around me, I have cropped the image into a wide horizontal format.

Here is the cropped original photo.

And, here is my final edited image.

If you would like to see what I did, click on the READ MORE >>>>>

I opened my cropped image in Photoshop CS6.

I duplicated the layer (command / Control + J). And I changed the layer to a Smart Object. The reason I did this was so that I could use Smart Filters on the layer and have the filters editable. You could also change the layer to a Smart Layer by right clicking on the layer and select convert to Smart Object.

You can tell the layer is a Smart Object by the little icon in the lower right corner of the layer thumbnail.

I want to use the High Pass Filter to sharpen the image to give the corn stubble more emphasis. I went to Filter > Other > High Pass.

This opened the High Pass Filter dialog. Notice that the filter shows under the layer as a Smart Filter. If you double click on the filter name, it opens the dialog again so you can edit it.

I selected a Radius of 22 pixels and then clicked OK. And, I changed the layer blend mode to Soft Light with Opacity 100%.

It is hard to see in this image, but the corn stubble is sharpened and stands out better. This also sharpened the sky area giving it a texture look. I could have used the Smart Filter layer mask and painted with a black brush over the sky region to hide the sharpening in the sky. But, I chose another method to even out the sky. I also liked what sharpening had done to the sky . . . but I didn't want it quite so strong.

Next I made a composite layer of all the visible layers below the composite layer. With the top layer selected, I used the command Layer > Merge Visible and held down the Option / Alt key when I clicked to select. This gives me a composite of all the visible layers on one layer. You could also use the keyboard short cut, command / control + option / alt + shift + E. I renamed the layer composite.

It looks the same since it is the same but now all on this one layer.

Then I duplicated the layer.

I converted the layer to a Smart Object so that I could use a Smart Filter on the layer. I want to blur this layer and then fade the blur into the sky on the layer below it. I opened the Gaussian Blur filter, Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

The Gaussian Blur dialog opens.

I set the radius to 15 pixels and clicked OK. It opens as a Smart Filter. and the blur is editable if I want to change it.

You can see that the blur is over the entire image. I want it only over the sky. The Smart Filter gives me a filter mask that is white showing the whole filter. I selected the mask by clicking on it. Then, using a black soft brush I painted over the trees and field thus hiding the blur over those areas. This leaves only the sky being blurred. I reduced the layer Opacity to 70% thus allowing some of the sharpened layer below to show through. The smooths out the sky to the point that I like.

Now my fields and trees are nice and sharp and the sky is a little fuzzy.

Now I want to use Kim's texture kk_melody. I thought that the greenish-yellow might be just what I was looking for for the image. But, you never know. Here is what kk_melody looks like at normal mode and 100% Opacity. I used Free Transform to resize the texture to my image size. I want to keep the texture's edges at my image edges.

After looking at various layer blend modes for the layer, I decided that I liked the Divide mode best. And Opacity 100%.

This gives me my final edited image. It has the feel of what my mind was seeing when I took the photo of a field near my home from my car window as I was sitting there enjoying the view.

Here it is.

I hope you enjoyed seeing what I did on this image.

Go to Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen to see what others have done for this Free & Easy theme.

Live life fully and enjoy.

Oh, that's beautiful! What a gorgeous edit. And isn't it nice to finally start seeing green?! (We're still a few weeks away from that, but at least all the snow is finally gone!)
