Welcome to EarlK Design!

The EarlK Design blog consists mainly of entries that show how to do things using Adobe Photoshop that I hope you will find helpful and give your creative mind more tools to work with.

I use Adobe Photoshop CS6, and sometimes Adobe Illustrator CS5, Lightroom 5, and Corel Painter X. However, I believe that much of what I show can be done using Photoshop Elements.

Texture Tuesday . . . free & easy . . . 29 July 2014

Another Texture Tuesday with Kim Klassen. This is another free & easy eDition.

Cathy at Ma Vie Trouvee had suggested that I use some of my my photos that I took when I was living in Germany in the mid-1950s for some of my blog posts. This is a great idea. One of my favorite photos is one that I took in the small town of Spangdahlem in 1955. It is of a traveling woodworker journeyman.

I used Kim's texture as a background paper for my image and ended up with this image.

If you would like to see how I did this, click on the READ MORE >> >> >>

The journeyman travels of the craftsmen have a tradition in Germany that has survived from the late Middle Ages, in the 15th century, until today with a few modern adjustments. A traveling journeyman must meet a string of conditions: only those who have passed the journeyman’s exam, are single, and have no children or debts, may go on the road. They are allowed to travel only on foot or by hitch-hiking; public transportation may be used but is frowned upon.
Every traveling journeyman is required to wear the traditional clothing in public at all times, which simultaneously serves to identify the traveling journeyman as such. It generally consists of a wide-brimmed, black, floppy hat or cylinder, a collarless white shirt, a vest and jacket with pearl buttons, bell-bottomed trousers, and durable shoes.  The color of the traditional clothing varies according to the journeyman’s occupation. For example, in the case of masons and stone cutters, it is beige or gray; in the case of woodworkers, it is black. The journeyman in my photo is a carpenter woodworker. He was especially proud of his sterling silver buttons on his vest.
My command of German was very limited, so I was unable to get too many details of his work and travels. He was in Spangdahlem doing some carpenter repair work.
Remember, this photo was taken in 1955. I was using a Leica M-3 35-mm film camera with a 50-mm lens. I was using Kodak black and white Panatomic-X film. I did my own processing and printing of my photos. Unfortunately, over the years I no longer have the original film or prints of my photos from Europe. The only images I have are ones that I have scanned from photos I sent my parents. But, this is better than not having any at all.

I am using Photoshop CS6 on a Mac.
I started my layout by opening a new document and brought in Kim's texture kk_grunged. I am using the texture as a background paper. Here it is in Normal mode and 100% Opacity. I think it will make a great background for my image of the journeyman.

What I want to do next is to clip my image of the journeyman onto a custom made clipping mask that is above the background layer. First, I opened the image of the journeyman on a layer above the background. I opened the image as a Smart Layer, see the little icon in the lower right corner. Then using Free Transform, command / control - T, I adjusted the image size to cover the entire page.

Now I want to clip the image to a custom clipping mask. The mask needs to be on a layer below the image. I used the keyboard shortcut. I held down the command /control key and clicked on the add new layer button. This puts the new layer below the active layer. The new layer is blank, nothing on it. I will create my custom mask on this layer.

But, first, let me clip the image to the empty layer. I'll do this by holding down the option / alt key, place the cursor on the line between the image layer and the empty layer and when I see the cursor change to the little symbol showing it will clip, I click the mouse.

And, when it is clipped, the image disappears. This is because there is nothing on the empty layer to clip to. I need to create my mask on the blank layer.

I select the Brush Tool. In the Brush Preset Picker in the Brush option bar, I select a rather scruffy brush. I believe the brush I selected is one from a set from Nancy Rowe Janitz.

Then I opened the Brush Panel. In the Brush Tip Shape, I kept the Spacing at 25%.

Then, in Shape Dynamics, I set Size Jitter 0%, Control Off since I am using a Mouse. Set Angle Jitter 100%. In the example of the setting at the bottom, it shows that I will get a nice scruffy edge with my brush.

I make sure my foreground color is black. I set the Brush Opacity to 30% in the Brush Options Bar. And on the blank layer below the image I click and held the mouse down in the central part of the layer where I know there is the image in the layer above. Keeping the mouse clicked down, I paint black on the mask layer over where I want the image to show. The 30% opacity will be my outer most part of the mask.

You won't see the mask in the layer panel until you release the mouse.

Then I kept Opacity 30% and clicked the mouse and held it down while painting another 30% over a more central part of where I want the image to be. That makes that part 60% opaque.

Then I switch the brush opacity to 100% to paint in the part of the mask that I want to show all of the image. That is how I created my custom clipping mask.

Next I created my text layers. I used a dark brown selected from the texture layer for the text color.

And that is how I created a custom clipping mask to add just the portions of my image that I wanted over the texture background. Here it is.

That's all for now.

Live life fully and enjoy.

What a great idea to use some of your old photos. I love the page you produced. Thanks for the information about the journeymen and for the tutorial. I learned a lot! Have a great week, Earl!

Fantastic idea Earl I love the image and your processing...

Very interesting post Earl, at first I thought this young man was from out West as he does look somewhat like some of our pioneers. Looks really nice with the added texture.

Dotti said...

This is a classic, Earl! Like Barbara, I first thought it was a pioneer from the West. Finding out this was taken in Germany makes me realize we're not really as different as we think we are, are we?

abrianna said...

I too thought he was from the West at first. Wonderful things to know about the journeyman. I picked up some information to pass onto my kids as we are studying the Middle Ages this year. Great photo idea!

Just gorgeous. I love your information about the journeyman. Thank you for including the tutorial.

At first I thought he was a western cowboy. His story is so interesting. Love your processing.

Wow... We lived in Germany for three years in the 1970s so it was so interesting to read about the journeyman. We would often see the chimney sweepers dressed in their traditional clothes. Your photo is awesome. Thank you for sharing and for your wonderful tutorial. I always enjoy them :o )

This is so awesome that you have these photographs from the 50s. I would think the scanned photos will be just fine for you to edit with textures. The brown texture on this one gives it a vintage, antique feel. Perfect!

I truly enjoy these types of blog posts - compelling picture, the story behind the picture, a little history and a little photo editing. Your picture reveals the rich and full life you lead. Love the end result and thank you again for sharing your expertise. My youngest son, age 17, just got a Mac, and he is in heaven! I'll show him your work, too.

I love hearing about traditions and customs that are still in existence. This is such a fabulous story both about the journeyman and your photography history. Your texture edit is fantastic and the result is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing the process. Love your work.
